In 2013 Middlesex-London Paramedic Service made the strategic and environmentally conscious decision to implement an anti-idling solution in their EMS fleet. Their Management Team devised and executed a strong policy and procedure plan to ensure a high level of paramedic participation and anti-idle system engagement. Middlesex-London Paramedic Service made the decision to install the ACETECH AVI and ACETECH ECO-Run modules to support their goals.

The ECO-Run Module allows vehicles to turn your engine off and on when needed and reduces unnecessary vehicle idling. It helps reduce costs, promotes better driving behaviour and reduces emissions to create a more eco-friendly fleet.

Some of the ECO-Run features include:

Start, Stop System – this uses technology to turn your engine off when it no longer necessary,

Equipment – allows you to park and operate climate heating and cooling systems, emergency lights, cameras and communication devices, even when the vehicle is turned off.

Web Based Reporting – All data from the vehicle is fed into our cloud-based software platform so you can monitor your fleets information on rpm, idling, fuel usage, carbon and cost savings to monitor and improve your fleets performance in real-time.

Safety – there is an emergency re-start button, with the option for crew override as a cautionary measure. There are also optional audible warnings.

Customisation – Your driver and crew have total control of the vehicle, with the option for automatic or manual restarts, as well as programmable shutdown options.

RESULTS:

Since implementing the ECO RUN Module there has been a 76% reduction of engine Idling,
49,284 litres of fuel saved each year,
$90,500 saved in 1 year
equating to a staggering 223,469 lbs of carbon saved annually.

In 2015 Middlesex-London Paramedic Service received the first-ever National ACETECH Informatics Award. The award was created to acknowledge a significant contribution or achievement by an EMS service.

The 2015 award was presented to Middlesex-London Paramedic Service in recognition of their contribution to outstanding reduction of global carbon emissions. Paramedics at Middlesex-London Paramedic Service have taken an active role in “greening” up the service and have been the most proactive service at engaging the ECO-Run solution. This attitude along with direction from management resulted in reduced excessive idle time at Middlesex-London Paramedic Service by an average of 72 per cent.

When asked to comment on the ACETECH system and its impact on operations, Neal Roberts, Middlesex-London Paramedic Service Chief of EMS said, “Middlesex-London Paramedic Service has been utilizing ACETECH technology since early 2012. In addition to providing a wireless hotspot for data access and transfer, AVL, vehicle status reporting on warning system use, fuel and battery condition, etc., we also benefit from ACETECH’s unique ECO mode.

Roberts went on to say, “Our area hospitals use outdoor parking instead of enclosed drive-throughs for access to their Emergency Departments. While engaged in ECO mode, Middlesex-London ambulances waiting for their crews, automatically shut down and restart saving fuel and reducing their carbon footprint … a large improvement on the previous practice of constant idling. Paramedics and patients return to a vehicle ready with charged batteries and comfortable interior temperatures.

“With the heavy electrical demands emergency vehicles thrive on, the ECO mode is helping our batteries last longer and ‘no-start’ incidents have reduced, controlling operating costs and increasing the readiness status of the fleet,” Roberts said. “ACETECH gives us the ability to report on all aspects of vehicle utilization, and make rapid decisions on vehicle status based on the real-time data provided.

The collaborative efforts at Middlesex-London Paramedic Service have set a standard for using innovation and strategy to make positive contributions for today and for the future. Their leadership provides an example for other services to strive for. Ultimately, a cleaner environment proactively promotes the health of the people in the community they serve, which is the goal of all paramedic services.
